Thank You Mike Nattis and Gimme That!

May 11, 2011

On Friday, May 6, 2011, Gimme That, a clothing apparel company that aims to “use basketball as a vehicle to achieving the global unification of all athletes around the world,” hosted the College Basketball experience fundraiser on the campus of Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey.

The mini-camp, which saw Stevens Men’s Basketball players work individually with student-athletes on shooting and ball-handling skills, benefited PeacePlayers International. Gimme That Chief Executive Mike Nattis spoke to the attendees about the power of basketball in resolving deep-seated societal divides. Overall, the fundraiser was great success, raising over $700 for PPI’s programs bridging divides around the world.

PPI would like to thank Mike Nattis and Gimme That for organizing and executing such a great event. It means a lot to us that there are companies like Gimme That that support our work of bridging divides through sport. Thank you!

A Jewish Lawyer and an Irish-American Lawyer Walk into a Bar…

November 13, 2010

And raise money for a great cause! Ok, ok, we know that we won’t be winning any comedy contests for that one, but our approach tends to be more Parish than Davis/Nash. Jokes aside though, this Thursday, November 13th, in Washington, DC, a group of Irish-American and Jewish lawyers (well, lawyers-to-be) really will be walking into a bar to raise money for a great cause.

The Jewish Law Students Association and the Irish-American Law Students Association of the Catholic University of America (alma mater of PPI Founder Sean Tuohey) have organized a bar night at the Star and Shamrock in Washington, DC, on behalf of PPI. Patrons can buy a $5 wrist band at the door for drink specials all night.

PPI is extremely grateful to the IALSA and the JLSA for their support, and is looking forward to a great event!

About the IALSA of CUA: The Irish-American Law Students Association (IALSA) was founded in 1995 to promote a better understanding of the Irish cultural and political heritage by sponsoring speakers and cultural events through which interested persons can learn about past and present Irish concerns. Service to the law school community and the surrounding neighborhood community is one of the primary missions of the IALSA. IALSA sponsors various speaker programs, social and fundraising events for local charities, as well as food, clothing, and Christmas drive boxes. Membership is open to all members of the law school community who are interested in networking, socializing, and serving the community.

About the JLSA: The Jewish Law Students Association (JLSA) is a member of the National Jewish Law Students Network. The JLSA strives to provide a sense of community to Jewish students by assisting with housing, school, and religious needs. The association also offers a forum for the discussion of legal, political, religious, and social issues affecting the Jewish community in the United States and abroad. Through lectures, discussion groups, newsletters, and social events, the JLSA seeks to educate and inform students, faculty, and the community at large. The JLSA also furnishes the latest literature on legal, political, cultural, and religious topics relevant to the Jewish law student. JLSA and The Guild of Catholic Lawyers co-sponsor a Model Seder for the entire law school community.

Thank You to Jordan Dosch!

May 17, 2010

Jordan's work will help support PeacePlayers International - Middle East, allowing hundreds of children just lke this each year to experience positive cross-communal interaction.

Jordan Dosch is a student at Brigham Young University Hawaii who’s now helping PeacePlayers International in two very different ways. Majoring in Conflict Management and English, Jordan has just arrived in Israel for a term abroad, where he’ll spend time volunteering with PPI. Jordan’s goal is to one day work in conflict management himself, and he views this experience as a major stepping stone to that life. He calls it “truly a once in a lifetime experience,” and has embraced it with whole-hearted enthusiasm.

But Jordan’s not only giving his time on the ground in the Middle East. He’s also taken it upon himself to raise funds for PPI’s work in Israel and the West Bank, with the hope of helping to support the very programs with which he’s volunteering. PPI is extremely grateful for Jordan’s commitment to our cause, and wishes him the best of luck on reaching his goal of $6,000!

Check out Jordan’s Firstgiving page – a one-stop hub for all information you’ll need regarding his initiative – here!

PeacePlayers International Would Like to Thank STAMP at McGill University

April 12, 2010

PPI was thrilled to recently hear from Aaron Bilek, the Director of Students Taking Action for Medicine and Peace (STAMP) at McGill University. STAMP is McGill’s grassroots activist organization at the medical and dental faculties, open to the participation of all, that encourages students to take action to address important world problems.

The McGill community taking in the vernissage.

This January, STAMP held a vernissage on McGill’s campus, exhibiting the winners of a photography contest called “Picturing Peace.” The winners were made into a calendar, with all proceeds going to PeacePlayers International. Besides raising awareness among the McGill community, STAMP raised $650 (Canadian) for PeacePlayers International’s work in the Middle East – that’s almost enough to fund two children in our program for an entire year!

PeacePlayers International sincerely thanks STAMP for their support, and wishes them the best of luck in their future projects. If you’d like more information about STAMP, you can email them here.

Thanks to Sarah Brown and the Sisters of Kappa Alpha Theta

PPI thanks the sisters of Kappa Alpha Theta at the University of Virginia

Sarah Brown, a senior at the University of Virginia, is one of many distinguished former PPI interns – in fact, she’s one of the early architects of our grassroots activities. Though she’s no longer a regular in the PPI office, Sarah has continued to support our work, most recently in combination with her sorority sisters at Kappa Alpha Theta. Theta organizes a trunk sale for charity twice each year, and picks a different beneficiary each time. Last semester, Sarah and her sisters donated one of their sales to PPI, raising roughly $150. PPI is extremely grateful for Sarah and her sisters’ support.

Help PPI win $1 million!

November 18, 2009

Click here to vote now and help PeacePlayers International improve this child's future.

We’re no stranger to the power of competition at PeacePlayers International. Every day, we see competition and teamwork forging friendships where they were unheard of before – among Jewish and Arab children in Jerusalem, or Catholics and Protestants in Belfast, or Greek- and Turkish-Cypriots in Cyprus, or blacks, whites and Indians in South Africa. We know firsthand the power of competition to urge us to something greater.

We’ve just entered a competition of our own, and a win would mean quite a bit to the organization. Chase Community Giving recently announced it would be awarding $5 million to over 100 organizations – and YOU decide who wins. Please take just one minute and click here to vote for PeacePlayers International.

The top 100 vote-getters will each win $25,000 in the competition’s first round, with a potential for greater prizes – up to $1 mil. – after that. At PPI, $25,000 is about enough to support one PeacePlayers International Fellow, or as many as FOUR integrated teams for a semester. That’s nearly FIFTY children given a unique opportunity to make friendships across generations-old divides through basketball.

So please vote. Then, forward this note to your friends to ask them to help out too. Facebook, Twitter, Change.org – wherever you are, we hope you’ll carry our message with you. With your support, we can make an even bigger impact worldwide.

Thank you in advance!

STAMP unites and educates students at McGill University

Students Taking Action for Medicine and Peace (STAMP) is a grassroots activist organization based at the medical and dental faculties of McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, that aims to empower students to take action on problems of medicine and peace.

STAMP, led by Project Manager Noura Hassan, is now organizing a photo contest called “Picturing Peace.” All photos entered in the competition will be displayed at a vernissage night on November 25th that will feature Middle Eastern food, entertainment, and speakers. The 12 best photos will be included in a calendar, the proceeds of which will support PeacePlayers International.

PPI is extremely grateful for STAMP’s support (and excited to have another supporter in the McGill community). For more information, please visit STAMP online.

UPDATE: Congratulations (and Thank You) to Our First Hall of Famer!

Ema with some PPI - ME participants in the Middle East

Ema during her summer volunteering in the Middle East

PeacePlayers International would like to thank Ema Billings, who has been one of PPI’s most enthusiastic and inspiring supporters since she first learned of our organization.  After visiting PeacePlayers International – Middle East (PPI – ME) as a student at Brigham Young University Hawaii (BYUH) in 2008, Ema returned to her campus and led multiple initiatives to support the programs she had seen first hand. She set – and exceeded – a personal fundraising goal.  She led BYUH’s Students for International Development club as they organized a PPI film night, complete with PPI wristbands. And she teamed up with Sariah Howard and Art Saowichit to help @RTIMOS, a production company based at BYUH, organize a “Peace Internationally” concert, which raised roughly $2,000 for PPI – ME. As if all that wasn’t enough, she paid her own way to the Middle East this summer, where she volunteered with PeacePlayers International, among other nonprofit organizations.

Ema is currently wrapping up her thesis, which explores teaching conflict resolution to school children in Hawaii, and she is preparing to apply to graduate school, where she hopes to study either Peace Studies or Conflict Analysis and Resolution. PeacePlayers International is only one of the many causes Ema supports. You can follow all her latest activities at http://www.ema4peacebuilding.com/.

For her continued passion for PPI’s cause, PeacePlayers International would like to induct Ema Billings as the first official member of its Sixth Man and Woman Hall of Fame.

The Sixth Man and Woman Hall of Fame is where PeacePlayers International recognizes its most outstanding and inspirational volunteers, those who have given 110% to its mission of using basketball to bridge divides. Inspired by basketball’s “Sixth Men” and ”Sixth Women” – players who forgo the glory of a starting spot to make crucial contributions to their teams when they’re needed most, the Sixth Man and Woman Hall of Fame honors those who have helped support PeacePlayers International while hundreds, even thousands, of miles away from our programs.

Jenna Weinberg, Sports to Support, and the University of Michigan

October 15, 2009

university-of-michigan_logoPeacePlayers would like to thank Jenna Weinberg, Sports to Support, and the entire University of Michigan community for their recent work organizing a tournament to benefit PPI. Jenna, a veteran PPI volunteer and organizer, began planning the tournament months ago, while she was actually assisting another student group, University of Michigan Learning Communities, with their own event.

This semester, Jenna worked independently but enlisted the help of Eric Spector and Sports to Support, a University of Michigan club that organizes sporting events to raise funds for various causes.  Together, Jenna and Sports to Support recruited ten teams of three, with each participant making a small donation. They successfully lobbied the University of Michigan Student Assembly for start-up funds, and also secured gift card donations from Chipotle, Noodles & Co., and Buffalo Wild Wings for the winners. In all, Jenna and Sports to Support successfully raised $400 for PeacePlayers International, and a great time was had at the event by all.

PeacePlayers International would like to thank everyone involved for their help. Go Wolverines!
